Objective:
Score points by retrieving the beach ball and getting it back to your team’s baseline without being tagged.
Materials Needed:
- One beach ball
Game Setup:
- Divide the students into two teams and have each team line up at opposite baselines of the gym or playing area.
- Number off the players on each team, ensuring that both teams have corresponding numbers (e.g., each team has a player numbered 1, 2, 3, etc.).
- Place the beach ball in the center of the playing area.
How to Play:
- The game leader calls out a number (or multiple numbers), and the players with the corresponding number(s) from both teams must run to the center to grab the beach ball.
- The player who successfully retrieves the beach ball must try to make it back over their team’s baseline without being tagged.
- If the player successfully crosses their baseline with the ball, their team earns 2 points.
- If a player is tagged before crossing the baseline, the tagging team earns 1 point.
- If more than one number is called, players from the same team may pass the ball to each other as they try to reach their baseline.
- If the ball touches the floor during a pass or play, the opposing team earns 1 point.
- Play multiple rounds, calling out different numbers each time.
- The game ends either after a designated number of rounds, a designated winning score is reached (e.g., first team to twenty points), or time ends (e.g., We’ll play for ten minutes, and the team with the most points wins.)
Pro Tips:
- Make sure there is plenty of space between the two teams to prevent collisions during the rush for the ball.
- Use a lightweight beach ball to avoid injuries, and remind players to play gently and avoid physical contact when tagging.
- Emphasize teamwork and strategy when calling multiple numbers, especially when passing the ball to teammates.
- Keep an eye on the pace of the game and ensure that players are tagging gently to avoid rough play.
