God’s Compass: Following His Path

Truth Taught: When we follow God’s guidance, we stay on the right path, but when we go our own way, we can get lost.

Materials:

  • A compass (or compass app on your phone)
  • A map (or directions for a simple treasure hunt)
  • A blindfold
  • A small object to represent a “treasure” (hidden in a designated spot)
  • Bible

Instructions:

  1. Show the children the compass and explain how it always points north. Say: A compass helps us find our way when we don’t know where we’re going. Without a compass, it’s easy to get lost.

  2. Choose a child and give them a blindfold. Spin them around and ask them to try to find the “treasure” without any guidance. As they stumble, say: This is like us trying to go through life without following God’s directions. We don’t know where to go, and we end up getting lost or confused.

  3. Now, take off the blindfold and give the child the compass and map (or simple directions). Guide them step-by-step to find the hidden “treasure.” Once they find it, explain: This is like when we follow God’s guidance. His Word is like a compass that always shows us the right way to go.

  4. Read Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT): “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.”

  5. Explain: When we trust God and follow his Word, we are like the person with the compass. We may not always know what’s ahead, but God shows us the right way, just like the compass points us north.

  6. Ask the children: What are some ways we can follow God’s path? Encourage them to think about praying, reading the Bible, listening to godly advice, and trusting God’s guidance.

  7. Conclude: Just like we need a compass to find the right way, we need to follow God’s guidance in life to make sure we’re on the right path. When we trust him, we won’t get lost.

Aha Moment: The child’s experience of being lost without the compass versus being able to find the treasure with guidance clearly shows how God’s Word helps guide us through life, creating that moment of discovery.
