The Greatest Gift – A Christmas Object Lesson for Kids

Truth Taught:

Jesus is the greatest gift, freely available to us, and we find him when we seek him with all our hearts.

Materials:

  • A large, beautifully wrapped gift box
  • A smaller wrapped box inside the larger one
  • A Bible wrapped inside the smaller box

Instructions

  1. Choose a volunteer from the children to open the large, beautifully wrapped gift box.
  2. Ask: How does it feel to open a present like this? Let them respond.
  3. When they discover another smaller box inside, ask: Were you expecting another gift inside? What do you think could be in the next one? Let them open the smaller box.
  4. As they open the second box and find the Bible, explain: Sometimes, the best gifts aren’t what we expect right away. We have to keep looking and seeking for what really matters.
  5. Read Matthew 7:7-8 (NLT): “Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.”
  6. Explain: Just like with this gift, we sometimes have to keep seeking, asking, and knocking to find Jesus. The good news is that God wants us to find him! Jesus is already reaching out to us—he is the greatest gift we could ever receive.
  7. Reinforce the message by reading John 3:16 (NLT): “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” Explain that this is the greatest gift, and God is offering it to us freely—if we are willing to receive it.
