Using God’s Armor

Truth Taught: With God’s protection, we are strong and able to stand firm. Without it, we are vulnerable and easily broken.

Materials:

  • Two inflated balloons
  • A strip of duct tape
  • A toothpick

Instructions:

  1. Hold up the first balloon and say: This balloon represents us when we try to live life on our own, without God’s protection. Let’s see what happens when tough times come along.

  2. Use the toothpick to pop the first balloon. As it pops, say: When we rely on our own strength and don’t trust God to protect us, we are fragile and easily hurt, like this balloon.

  3. Now take the second balloon and place a strip of duct tape over a small section of it. Hold it up and say: This balloon represents us when we trust in God’s protection and put on his armor. Let’s see how this balloon stands up to trouble.

  4. Use the toothpick to poke the balloon where the duct tape is. The balloon won’t pop. Explain: Just like the duct tape protected this balloon from popping, God’s armor protects us when we face difficulties in life. He makes us strong when we trust him!

  5. Read Ephesians 6:13-17 (NLT):
“Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”

  6. Ask the children: What are some ways we can put on God’s armor in our lives? Encourage them to think about reading the Bible, praying, trusting God, and making good choices.

Aha Moment: The demonstration of the balloon popping without protection versus staying strong with duct tape helps kids understand the metaphor of God’s armor protecting them when they trust in him, making the spiritual concept tangible and memorable.
